Discussion: Garbage Pail Kids cards were all the rage back in the day. They originated in 1985 to parody The Cabbage Patch Kids. I remember my brother being more into them than I was. They are pretty repulsive. Looking at them now, I can not imagine them existing in the age of "It Gets Better." But, much to my surprise, after doing some research, apparently Garbage Pail Kids cards have been reissued in 2005 and 2010, including a "Where are They Now?" series (I have found three of these cards on one of the artist's website and found them kind of disappointing: http://monkeyboycomic.blogspot.com/2010/03/garbage-pail-kids-flashback-where-are.html)
I remember parents were outraged and that they were banned in schools, but I don't remember if my school banned them. My school did ban slap bracelets and head banging though (supposedly both due to health concerns).
Fun facts: The Cabbage Patch Kids company sued the Garbage Pail Kids and as a part of the settlement, Garbage Pail Kids had to be re-drawn to look less similar to Cabbage Patch dolls.

I would have to say as an enthusiast, Garbage Pail Movie is indeed one of the best movies ever, like seriously I can vaguely remember the plot line. The kids are kidnapped and kept in a factory to test chemicals on them or something. It was pretty awesome.
ReplyDeleteI was not allowed to watch the movie much to my dismay.... I do remember thinking the cards were a ripoff because they repeated pictures. For every picture there were 2 different names.
